EU-Japan trade balance:
Germany is Japan's largest trading partner in the EU, with EURO 13 billion of goods exported to Japan in 2007, and EURO 18 billion of goods imported from Japan to Germany.
The traditional trade balance does not include software license fees and other intellectual property (patent and technology licenses, digital content, music), and direct business via foreign direct investment, and imports via third countries. Goods shipped from Japan to EU countries are booked for the country of entry into the EU, e.g. goods imported from Japan to Germany via Dutch ports are counted as exports to the Netherlands. Therefore the traditional trade balance gives only a partial view of business between EU and Japan.
